Columbus, The Indians and Human Progress - Due Friday 9/16

History is like a story in a way, it depends on who is telling it...

Read Howard Zinn's account of the encounter between Christopher Columbus and the Native people of Hispanola from People's History go the United States.

What is Zinn's perspective on Columbus? How is it different from other perspectives you have heard?

  2. Zinn's perspective on Christopher Columbus could be labeled as harsh. He explained that Columbus was cruel and that he was a mass murderer. Because of him, the Arawak race became extinct. Columbus caused a mass genocide toward them, according to Zinn atleast.

Zinn's perspective is different from others I have heard. According to others, Columbus was a great man, the first man to discover America at that. Also that he was a man full of determination due to him never giving up on trying to find gold.

-zinns perspective: he said that Christopher Columbus was wrong and who committed genocide and attacks people

-this is different from what I hear, because everyone has said something good about it, and what Zinn says something totally different and opposite of what they had heard

  5. Usually, Columbus is Labeled as the Person who Claims he "Discovered" America, but he was also Responsible for the Coumbian Exchange which was the transfer of people, animals, plants, and diseases back and forth from the Americas to Europe. Although, In Zinn's Perspective, Columbus was a Heartless Murderer, who Killed Many, leaving the Arawak race extinct.

  7. zinn's perspective on Columbus was a horribe man and horribe person. He made columbus look like a murder a cold blooded person that killed a popoultion of people and didnt care for any body else

Every body perspective on Columbus is the man who discover america or a person who send all this animals and all those horrible diseases. On my opinion i think zinns opinion on columbus is kinda true because alot of people where killed of diseases everything that he did wasnt all good.

  10. I think Columbus did well and bad. Why?? Example: you're walking, and you see a bill, and it's a 100$ bill. What you gonna do?? take the 100$ or you just leave the bill??..... but, he did bad when he took the native (Indies) as slaves.

Something different: In Dominican Republic they teached me Columbus took all the gold.. in the reading says there was no-gold

  12. Zinn's perspective about Christopher Columbus was that he was a murder and not a hero like some people want to believe he was cruel and that he committed genocide against the Indians.

It's different from other perspective because I have heard his heroism when is not true.

  16. Christopher Columbus is portrayed as a "hero", who discovered America. But after reading Zinn's account about Columbus it is clear that he is not a hero. He actually sailed in expectation of finding Asia, but ended up in Hispaniola. Zinn explains how Columbus and other assisting him used the native people for finding gold and also making them slaves .

They used their power, created fear to make the native people do what they wanted them to do
Columbus and his people murdered people, They created so much fear in people and the natives started using poison to kill themselves and family members to be safe from spainards.
